Obesity and Acupressure

Acupressure is a kind of treatment that is based on the principles of acupuncture. But it is just dissimilar from acupuncture because it require needles. Instead it actually involves the use of finger pressure at specific points along the body to treat ailments such as obesity, arthritis, tension and stress, aches and pains and menstrual cramps. More than 12million adults and one million children will be obese by 2010 according to a report by the Department of Health. The Health Survey for England also warns 19% of boys and 22% of girls (aged 2 to 15) and 33% of men and 28% of women will be obese by 2010.

There are several therapies that are used for losing extra fat from the body. Acupressure is one of the spontaneous therapies that are widely used for fat loss. Acupressure and Acupuncture are oriental modes of treatment in which specific points on the skin are stimulated to favorably influence internal organs. These therapies originated almost 5000 years ago and they are being used even today. Presently, these therapies are being practiced throughout the world. Even the WHO recognizes these therapies as authentic and effective modes of treatment and recommends their use in a variety of disorders and diseases.

Scientists have discovered that acupuncture can help children suffering from inherent obesity. Acupuncture was given to 62 children with inherent obesity and the children’s body mass and lipid metabolism were monitored both before and after the treatment. The treatment was found to have a beneficial effect not only did the children report feeling better within themselves, but tests showed that the treatment led to body mass reduction and decrease of fatty tissue content, increased performance abilities, recovery of cardiovascular function, and normalization of blood serum lipids. The results were so significant that the researchers recommended that acupuncture treatment should be utilised for children with inherent obesity.
